Between the Pages

The story of Oslo's forgotten Tullinløkka is given a new chapter. By reflecting the site's historical character, a timeless public space is created, where life returns between the buildings. Historically, Tullinløkka has been linked to knowledge, culture, and communication, framed by the Cultural History Museum, the National Gallery, Domus Juridica, and the University Garden. While in the heart of Oslo, it remains underused. This lack of identity makes it feel more like a backyard than a public space.

The concept “Between the Pages” aims to bridge the past and future of Tullinløkka, creating a space where contemporary culture and knowledge are celebrated. The design introduces new green spaces, including park lind trees and an exhibition floor, symbolizing openness and connection. The space will feature a new neoclassical style in harmony with the surrounding architecture. Art and literature will be integrated, reflecting the intellectual heritage of the area.

The exhibition floor can adapt to various uses, such as an ice rink, stage, or grassy area, while also functioning as a stormwater collection point. Gravel paths and planted beds will provide areas for students, passersby, and book enthusiasts to relax. Lighting will illuminate the space at night, ensuring safety and highlighting the vegetation and artwork.

The material choices and design elements are inspired by Tullinløkka's existing palette, with contrasting textures and patterns symbolizing the transition between spaces. This new vision aims to revive the area, making it a place for dialogue, reflection, and connection between the city’s institutions.
